FAQ • What's the deal with the 2005 Pacific Swimming time standards hierarchy?

The age group time standards of Pacific Swimming are significantly different in 2005. In the past, the age group time standards were as follows:

B • A • AA • Q • PRT • NRT (B • A • PRT for 8/under)

Starting May 2005, they are now as follows:

B • BB • A • AA • AAA • PRT • AAAA • NRT (B • A • PRT for 8/under)

The B, BB, A, AA, AAA, and AAAA time standards for the 9-10 through 17-18 age groups are entirely new for 2005 and are based on the USA Swimming National Age Group Top 16 Based Time Standards.¬? The B times for 8/unders have also changed for 2005.

You can get more information about these new standards from Pacific Swimming at the following web address:

Progressive Time Standards Hierarchy used at SwimConnection:

SwimConnection uses uses a progressive time standards hierarchy to help motivate swimmers in achieving their swimming goals. These are the time standards that get applied on a swimmer's best times page, online meet entries, meet results, top times, etc.

While the progressive time standards hierarchy used at SwimConnection is normally identical to the one published by Pacific Swimming, there is a slight difference in 2005 for the 9-10 to 17-18 age groups.

In the 2005 Pacific Swimming Age Group Time Standards, it is important to note that a PRT time is sometimes faster than a AAA time, and sometimes slower than the AAA time. For example, for girls 11-12, long course, if a swimmer's time in the 100 breast is 1:25.65, she'd have a PRT time without having achieved a AAA time yet.

Event B A AA AAA PRT NRT
100 breast 1:49.99 1:33.79 1:29.69 1:25.59 1:25.69 1:18.99
200 breast 3:57.59 3:23.69 3:15.19 3:06.69 3:03.99 2:52.59

Because of this, we've decided to remove the PRT time in the SwimConnection's progressive time standards hierarchy for the 9-10 through 17-18 age groups. This will remove any confusion that could arise should a PRT time be slower than a AAA time.

However, please note that it is always possible to see how a swimmer fares against the PRT times by specifically selecting the "PRT" time standards in a swimmer's best time page.

The progressive time standards hierarchy used at SwimConnection for 2005 is therefore as follows:

8-under    B • A • PRT
9-10    B • BB • A • AA • AAA • AAAA • NRT
11-12    B • BB • A • AA • AAA • AAAA • NRT
13-14    B • BB • A • AA • AAA • AAAA • NRT
15-16    B • BB • A • AA • AAA • AAAA • NRT
17-18    B • BB • A • AA • AAA • AAAA • NRT
19-over JUN • JTF • SEN • STF • SECT • JNAT • SNAT

Comparing a swimmer's times against other time standards:

It is always possible to see how a swimmer's times compare to time standards other than the progessive time standards hierarchy described in the previous section. You simply need to select the time standard of interest in the swimmer's best time page to see if the time standard has been achieved by the swimmer, and if not, how far the times are (in seconds and percentage) from the standard.

Also, please note that meets in the senior program are open to any swimmer, regardless of age, as long as a swimmer meets the qualifying standard. The times of an age group swimmer can therefore be compared against standards such as Junior, Junior Trials&Finals, Senior, and Senior Trials&Finals to see if the swimmer is eligible for such meets. While the senior program is generally aimed at faster swimmers aged 13 and up, it is not uncommon for 11-12-year-olds to qualify for, and swim at, meets within the senior program.
